If you’re prone to dependence, your doctor may want you to take a different medication so that you don’t risk becoming dependent on Xanax. You shouldn’t use any medications that contain opioids while you’re taking Vivitrol because Vivitrol blocks the effects of opioid medications. So taking an opioid drug with Vivitrol would cause the opioid to not work properly. Never try to overcome this by taking a larger amount of opioids.
This medication is a mu-opioid receptor antagonist and also a weaker antagonist of the kappa and delta-opioid receptors. This activity is designed to improve the knowledge of competency of practitioners selecting naltrexone as part of the individualized approach for patients with alcohol or opioid use disorder. Naltrexone’s indications, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, administration methods, significant adverse effects, contraindications, monitoring, warnings, and toxicity are discussed. (It was also approved for the treatment of opioid addiction in 2010.) Taken orally each day or by monthly injection, Vivitrol works to block the opioid receptors, or pleasure centers, in the brain.

Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. You must stop taking opioids before you start receiving VIVITROL. To be effective, VIVITROL must be used with other alcohol or drug recovery programs such as counseling. It is not known if VIVITROL is safe and effective in children.
